Learn how to Make Wax Melts

Let's make wax melts!

Creating your own wax melts is a fun and rewarding activity that allows you to personalise the scent and design to your liking. Whether you're making them for personal use or as a thoughtful gift, here's a step-by-step guide to help you craft your own wax melts at home.

Materials Needed

For this recipe we will be using NatureWax 660-55m Rapeseed & Coconut for wax melts, with 10% fragrance oil. We will be pouring our wax into a 6 cavity clamshell.

Before you begin, gather the following materials:

  • Wax: NatureWax 660-55m Rapeseed & Coconut (weigh out 72.73g of wax)
  • Fragrance Oil: Your chosen fragrance oil (weigh out 7.27g of your chosen fragrance oil)
  • Dye (optional): If you are adding dye, add this as soon as the wax is taken off the heat.
  • Clamshells: 1 No. 6 cavity clamshell
  • Weighing Scales: To weigh your wax and fragrance oil.
  • Double Boiler & Jug: To safely melt the wax.
  • Thermometer: To monitor wax temperature.
  • Spoon or Spatula: A spoon or silicone spatula to mix the wax and fragrance.

Steps to Make Wax Melts

1. Prepare Your Workspace

Start by setting up your workspace and have everything to hand. Lay down newspaper or an old cloth to catch any spills.

2. Measure and Melt the Wax

  • Measure 72.73g of wax for the 6 cavity clamshell.
  • Set up your double boiler by adding water to the bottom of the pan. Place your jug in the pan of water. Heat gently, stirring occasionally and checking the temperature regularly. Heat the wax to 70°C.

3. Add Fragrance and Colour

  • Once the wax is completely melted and reaches about 70°C, remove it from heat.
  • Add your fragrance oil and dye (if using) as soon as the wax is taken off the heat and mix well.
  • Stir slowly for approximately 2 minutes — this ensures that the fragrance oil and wax are evenly mixed.

4. Pour the Wax

  • Allow the wax to cool to 60°C, then carefully and slowly pour the wax into your clamshell, filling each cavity to the desired level.

5. Cool and Set

  • Let the wax cool and set completely for at least 48 hrs before using.

Tips for Success

  • Testing Scents: Not all fragrance oils are created equal. Some may have a stronger scent throw than others, so it may require some experimentation with the fragrance load.
  • Avoid Overheating: Keep a close eye on the wax temperature to prevent burning or altering the scent properties of the oils.
  • Storage: Store your wax melts in a cool, dry place to preserve their scent and appearance.

Enjoy Your Creation!

Now that you've made your own wax melts, you can enjoy them in a wax warmer or gift them to friends and family. Customise each batch with different scents and colours to suit various occasions and moods. Happy crafting!
